Allergy Treatment in Austin, TX

Allergy symptoms can look different from person to person. While some individuals experience mild, seasonal discomfort, others may deal with persistent congestion, sneezing, or irritation throughout the year. Symptom severity and triggers vary based on individual immune responses and environmental exposure.

At Austin Ear, Sinus & Allergy, we offer allergy testing as part of a comprehensive evaluation to help identify possible sensitivities that may be contributing to your symptoms. Testing results are used to support informed discussions about symptom management and individualized care options.

Understanding Possible Allergy Triggers

Allergy testing may provide helpful insight into substances that your immune system reacts to. While testing does not always explain all symptoms, it can support clinical decision-making when interpreted alongside your medical history and exam findings.

What Is Allergy Testing?

Allergy testing evaluates whether your immune system shows a response to specific substances, known as allergens. Identifying potential sensitivities can help guide conversations about symptom management, environmental control strategies, and treatment options when appropriate.

Common Allergens Evaluated

  • Pollen
  • Pet dander
  • Dust mites
  • Mold
  • Insect venom
  • Certain foods (such as milk, nuts, or shellfish)
  • Medications

Not all patients require testing for every allergen, and recommendations are based on your symptoms and clinical evaluation.

Types of Allergy Testing at Austin Ear, Sinus & Allergy

We offer several testing methods, selected based on your symptoms, medical history, and individual needs:

1. Skin Prick Testing

A commonly used, minimally invasive test to assess immediate allergic responses:

Small amounts of allergens are applied to the skin
The skin is lightly pricked to allow exposure
Reactions such as redness or swelling are evaluated after approximately 15–20 minutes

2. Intradermal Testing

Used in select cases when additional sensitivity is needed:

A small amount of allergen is injected just beneath the skin
Responses are closely monitored by our clinical team
This method is more sensitive and may produce false positives, which are interpreted carefully within the broader clinical context.

3. Blood Testing (Allergen-Specific IgE Testing)

Recommended when skin testing is not appropriate due to medications, skin conditions, or other considerations:

A blood sample is collected and analyzed for allergen-specific antibodies
Results provide additional information about immune system sensitivity
Positive results do not always indicate clinically significant allergies and must be reviewed alongside symptoms and exam findings.

Preparing for Allergy Testing

Prior to testing, our team will provide individualized instructions. In general, preparation may include:

Temporarily avoiding certain medications such as antihistamines
Sharing a complete list of current medications and health conditions
Staying hydrated and eating a light meal
Wearing comfortable clothing

After Your Test

Once results are available, your provider will review:

Which substances produced a response
The relative strength of reactions
How results may or may not relate to your symptoms
Testing results are used to guide discussion—not to make assumptions. Not all positive results require treatment.

Possible Management Options

Depending on your evaluation, management strategies may include:

  • Medications such as nasal sprays or antihistamines
  • Environmental or lifestyle modifications
