Hearing Loss and Testing in Austin, TX

Evaluation-Led Care for Sudden or Gradual Hearing Changes

Noticing that conversations sound muffled? Asking people to repeat themselves more often? Hearing loss can develop slowly or appear all at once, and the most important first step is a complete evaluation. At Austin Ear, Sinus and Allergy, our ENT physician and audiology team work together to identify what’s behind the change and explore options that may support better hearing in daily situations, depending on your evaluation results and individual needs.

Because hearing loss has many possible causes—from simple blockage to permanent inner-ear damage—every patient is assessed individually. Your visit gives us the information needed to discuss next steps based on your exam, testing results, and medical history.

Types of Hearing Loss

Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL)

Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common form and occurs when the inner-ear hair cells or auditory nerve pathways quit working as well as they should. These tiny hair cells help your brain tell the difference between subtle sounds, understand speech in noisy rooms, and recognize direction and distance.

When these cells are damaged, the result is often reduced clarity—not just reduced volume. You may hear a voice but struggle to understand the words, especially consonants like “S,” “H,” “F,” “T,” and “D.”

Common causes may include:

  • Aging
  • Long-term noise exposure
  • Certain medications
  • Head trauma
  • Medical conditions affecting blood flow or inflammation

Currently, inner-ear hair cells are not known to regenerate in humans, so SNHL is typically considered a permanent form of hearing loss. While medical therapies generally cannot reverse this damage, many people benefit from hearing technology such as hearing aids or, in selected cases, implantable devices. Your evaluation helps determine whether amplification may help improve everyday communication.

Conductive Hearing Loss

Conductive loss happens when something blocks sound from traveling through the ear canal or middle ear. In many cases, this type of hearing loss is treatable once the underlying issue is addressed.

Possible causes include:

  • Earwax blockage
  • Ear infections
  • Fluid behind the eardrum
  • Structural issues
  • Abnormal bone growth
  • Benign masses or polyps

Depending on what we find during your exam, treatment options may involve removing the blockage, prescribing medication, or recommending a procedure to restore normal movement within the middle ear. While improvement is possible for many patients, the outcome depends on the specific cause and your overall ear health.

Mixed Hearing Loss

Some people have a combination of sensorineural and conductive loss. For example, there may be age-related inner-ear changes along with wax buildup or fluid. A hearing test allows us to determine the degree of each component and outline a care plan that fits your situation.

Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis occurs when the stapes—the small bone in the middle ear responsible for transmitting sound—becomes fixed in place due to abnormal bone growth. This reduces its ability to carry sound to the inner ear. Symptoms may include muffled hearing, tinnitus, or dizziness. Treatment options vary and depend on exam findings and the nature of the bone changes.

When to Seek Care

If you notice new hearing loss, especially in one ear, schedule an evaluation as soon as possible. Some causes respond best when treated early. Sudden hearing loss should be considered an urgent concern; timely care may help limit long-term effects depending on the cause.
