Nasal Polyps:

The Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment Options

Nasal polyps are a common sinus issue, yet they’re often overlooked. If left untreated, they may contribute to common symptoms like persistent nasal congestion, poor breathing, and eventually, impact the quality of life.

Here at Austin Ear, Sinus and Allergy, we have a team of sinus specialists who can perform thorough sinus evaluations to determine whether nasal polyps are contributing to your persistent symptoms. We offer evidence-based treatment options that may help manage your symptoms and support sinus function.

What Are Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are soft, noncancerous growths that form in the tissue lining the sinuses. They may form individually or in clusters and are typically tear-shaped.

Small or individual polyps may not cause symptoms. On the other hand, larger or multiple growths, while not life-threatening, can potentially block airflow, affecting breathing and sinus drainage. This can lead to common symptoms like nasal obstruction, breathing difficulties, sinus pain and pressure, and a reduced sense of smell or taste.

What Causes Nasal Polyps?

The exact cause of nasal polyps isn’t always clear and easy to determine. However, they are often related to the inflammation of the sinus and nasal linings. Other factors that may increase the risk of nasal polyps include:

  • Chronic sinus infections
  • Asthma
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Aspirin sensitivity
  • Cystic fibrosis

What Are the Common Symptoms of Nasal Polyps?

Symptoms of nasal polyps vary per patient, depending on the size and number of growths. Common signs to look out for include:

  • Persistent nasal congestion
  • Frequent or recurrent sinus infections
  • Runny nose
  • Facial pain or pressure
  • Postnasal drip
  • Reduced or total loss of sense of taste and/or smell
  • Snoring or sleep disruption

How Are Nasal Polyps Diagnosed?

Here at Austin Ear, Sinus and Allergy, we use a combination of diagnostic tools to assess and diagnose nasal polyps:

  • Diagnostic tools such as nasal endoscopy and imaging to assess sinus health and function
  • An assessment of your symptoms and their severity, and your medical history

Our team’s diagnostic approach is designed to help us develop individualized care plans based on test findings and your personal needs.

How Are Nasal Polyps Treated?

Treatment for nasal polyps depends on the symptoms present, their severity, and the polyps’ size. The goal of the treatment is to reduce the inflammation of the sinus linings to potentially manage and reduce the symptoms. Treatment includes both non-surgical and surgical options:

Non-Surgical Treatment: Medications

Some medications may help reduce the inflammation of the sinus linings and manage the symptoms:

  • Saline rinses
  • Nasal corticosteroid sprays
  • Oral corticosteroids (short-term use for more severe symptoms)

While medications may help reduce symptoms in some patients, they may not shrink larger polyps or prevent regrowth. Individual results may vary.

Surgical Treatment: Endoscopic Polypectomy

Large, multiple, persistent, or recurrent nasal polyps may not respond well to standard medications. In such cases, your ENT care provider may recommend a procedure called endoscopic polypectomy, a more advanced treatment option.

Endoscopic polypectomy is a minimally invasive procedure to remove polyps through the nostrils using specialized tools. While results vary and recurrence is possible, this procedure may be effective in reducing blockage and improving breathing in some patients.
